Opportunistic Cycle Count

Today we discuss about a new advanced topic "Opportunistic cycle count" that is introduced in R12. This feature enables users to perform an unscheduled cycle count during picking operation if the picking item falls below a minimum quantity tolerance for the locator. If the resulting quantity is less than or equal to the specified quantity, then the system asks you whether or not you would like to perform a cycle count for this item at this locator.

For instance, if the Opportunistic Cycle Count Trigger Quantity is set to 3, then any time a pick from a locator leaves 3 or fewer pieces in the locator, the system prompts you to count the item. We will take Item as 'WM100', Sub-inventory as 'BULK' and Organization as 'W1' for our testing.

Pre-Requisites :

• Create generic Cycle Count definition which considers this part number for counting
• Sub-inventory should be defined and ensure pick happens from this sub-inventory
• Organization should be WMS Enabled

1. Now we will do the necessary opportunistic cycle count setup at sub-inventory level for 'BULK' sub-inventory. Enter the generic count name that is defined in 'Opportunistic Cycle Count Header' field. Enter 'Opportunistic Cycle Count Trigger Quantity' as 3 which does mean if the current pick transaction leaves the quantity to less than 3, the system automatically prompts you to do an unscheduled count. Enter the Opportunistic Cycle Count Days Threshold as 1 day in our example
which is the number of days tolerance that controls whether or not redundant cycle counts are performed. If a cycle count has been performed at this location for this item within the specified number of days, then the system does not prompt you to perform another cycle count for this item or locator combination.



This setup is very important. For example, if the Opportunistic Cycle Count Days Threshold is set to 10 days, then the system will only prompt you to count this item locator combination if there has not
been a cycle count in this location within the past 10 days.

2. Now we have a sales order pick which is picking the material from BULK sub-inventory and leaving the quantity to come down below our Trigger Quantity.

This triggers the user to do 'Opportunistic count' automatically for this item in the specified

Enter/Scan the LPN number that need to be counted and click on 'Detail' button to provide all the information about this LPN.

Enter the item detail and Quantity as 10. This does mean that while doing the pick, the system had shown the quantity as 2 which is much less than the actual physical quantity(10).

Once you click on 'Done' button, the cycle count is completed and the adjustments will happen as per cycle count setup(No approvals required in this case). The user will be automatically moved back to 'Pick Drop' screen to continue with his picking.

Now if you do an LPN Inquiry, you can clearly see that the available quantity in the LPN is updated to 10 successfully
