As businesses become interconnected using
various technology options such as EDI and XML, there is a need for global
product identification standards that are usable by all trading partners in the
extended supply chain. A major goal of these standards is to guarantee unique
and unambiguous identification of products and services across the supply chain.
A Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is a unique number assigned to a
product within the EAN/UCC framework for standard product identification.
The Oracle Warehouse Management and Inventory
Mobile Supply Chain Applications are capable of resolving items defined in the
system using GTIN. You can scan a GTIN barcode and the system will translate
the scanned value to an internal item.
Advantages :
- · Because GTIN is unique and widely accepted, the need for maintaining internal cross references to vendor or customer item is substantially reduced. Data entry and maintenance is also simplified.
- · Each packaging configuration of the item can be assigned a new 14-digit number. This implies that a carton of a particular product will have a distinct 14-digit number from a standard pallet of the same item. Warehouse operations are vastly simplified as the warehouse operator can transact based on standard pack quantities (i.e. Pick 2 Dz Banana) rather than transacting in primary UoM (e.g. 24 EA Banana)
Eg.
Item WM100 comes in two standard
pack configurations as below. Although the item is same, it will have different
GTIN for different packaging configurations.

Transactions
using GTIN:
When GTIN is scanned in a WMS mobile
transaction form, the cross-referenced item and packaging configuration (UoM)
is populated and at the background the conversion to primary UOM happens
automatically.
1. Receipt
:
Warehouse operator performs a miscellaneous
receipt of 2 pallets of item WM100.
He scans the EAN.UCC-14 bar code (50012345678900) on one of the pallet in the
item field. The item is defaulted to WM100
and UoM is defaulted to PLT. He
enters the quantity of the cases received (2) in the quantity field. In the
background a receipt transaction of 200
EA is posted.
2. Picking
:
Warehouse operator performs a pick load of 40
EA of item WM1000. He scans the EAN.UCC-14 bar code (20012345678905) appearing
on the master case in the item field. The item is defaulted to WM100 and UoM is
defaulted to CAS. The operator is suggested to pick 4 master cases. He enters
the quantity of the cases picked (4) in the quantity field. In the background a
pick load of 40 EA is posted.

How to Set Up and Use GTINs
1.
Specify profile value INV: GTIN Cross Reference
Type
(You can choose any option from LOV)
2.
Navigate to ‘Cross Reference Types’ form and
choose the one based on the profile option value set above.
3.
Click on Assign in the above form.
4.
Set up mapping between the internal item and
the GTIN code. One item may have more than one GTIN code. A structure that is less than 14 digits has to be right
justified to 14 digits and padded by leading zeros.
5.
Perform a mobile transaction with a GTIN code.
6.
Scan GTIN code which will translate it to its
internal item counterpart according to the cross-reference definition and
display the internal item number in the field.
